Preparing Your Home Before a Baby Arrives

Nobody tells you about the nesting phase. One day you're fine, relatively speaking, and the next you're at midnight reorganising the linen cupboard by thread count and genuinely considering whether your floor cleaner is going to be an issue.

It's going to be fine. Probably. But let's talk about the floor cleaner anyway.

Because here's the thing. You've got a newborn coming home. Possibly a toddler already living there who is currently somewhere out of sight eating something they absolutely should not be eating. The air quality in your home, the products on your surfaces, the stuff accumulating in corners you haven't looked at since you moved in, it all suddenly matters in a way it didn't before.

Not in a scary way. In a very fixable way. Let's go through it.

The air situation

Newborns breathe faster than adults. Their lungs are brand new and figuring everything out. They are also, for the foreseeable future, going to be spending the vast majority of their time indoors. Breathing whatever is in your air.

Conventional cleaning products release volatile organic compounds long after the clean is done. Synthetic fragrances, which are in almost everything you've probably been using without thinking about it, contain hundreds of individual chemical ingredients that don't have to be individually disclosed on the label. The word fragrance is doing an enormous amount of work and none of it is reassuring when you read into it.

Two things that genuinely help. An air purifier in the nursery with a HEPA filter makes a real difference. And plants. Spider plants, peace lilies, pothos. They filter toxins naturally, they look nice, and they are extremely difficult to kill which matters when you have a newborn and a toddler and a general sense that everything is a lot.

Our deep clean is specifically recommended before a baby arrives. Non-toxic throughout.

About our Deep Clean

The nursery. The therapeutic bit.

Setting up a nursery is one of the genuinely calming things you can do before the baby arrives. Not because it needs to be perfect. Because the act of making space, making it ready, is good for your mental health in a way that is difficult to explain until you're standing in a freshly sorted room thinking yes, okay, I can do this.

Declutter properly. Not a tidy. An actual declutter. Fewer things in the room means less dust, less visual noise, and less to navigate at 3am when you have absolutely no idea what is happening.

Sort the height of things before the baby arrives. Nappies, wipes, a spare set of clothes, everything you need for a change should be at a height you can reach without bending over. This sounds like a minor detail until it isn't. Drawers at the right height, a caddy within arm's reach, essentials organised before you're operating on no sleep and have to make decisions about where the nappy cream is.

The deep clean

Do it before the baby comes home. The whole house, but particularly the nursery, the areas you'll be spending most of your time, and anything with carpet or upholstery where allergens have been quietly building up.

Do it with non-toxic products. Allow time for the room to air properly. A clean home smells like nothing. Not like cleaning products. Nothing. That's how you know it's actually been done properly.

What Lemon Spring uses

Non-toxic, pH-balanced products on every single clean. No bleach, no ammonia, no synthetic fragrance. Reusable microfibre cloths. Nothing left behind on surfaces that you'd want to think twice about.

If you're preparing for a baby and you want a clean you genuinely don't have to worry about, we're here for it.

You've got enough on your list. The cleaning products don't need to be on it.
