Valentine’s Day is only around the corner. Whether you are celebrating with your partner or your girls, then we have you covered…

February 14th isn’t just for celebrating the love we have for each other, but also a perfect time to spread some love to our planet.
Like us here at Lemon Spring, you probably see Valentine’s an opportunity to show our planet a little affection. Whilst traditional Valentine’s are all cute and stuff, they often leave a not so sweet footprint on our environment. So we’ve provided 14, yes 14 (Just like the date), ecofriendly tips to help you celebrate your love sustainably (and yes, all the romance is still included).

1.
Choose Potted Over Cut

Roses are red violets are blue, but did you know potted plants are better for the earth too? Instead of the typical bouquet, why not get a potted beauty that grows? Bamboo, aloe, or spider plants make for lovely, long lasting gifts. Or get your hands dirty and plant some seeds together - its growth and love all wrapped all in one. Plus the benefit of looking absolutely gorgeous in your space after a really long time.

Sweeten the Deal Sustainably

Valentine’s wouldn’t be Valentine’s without chocolate would it? We agree that that chocolate is a must, but lets make it guilt-free with fair-trade options. This ensures the cocoa comes from farms that prioritise the wellbeing of their workers and the planet. Delicious and responsible - the best combo.

DIY Cards

Shop-bought cards are so last year. This year, put pen to paper and get designing a heartfelt note, a doodle, or even an original poem. (You will definitely get some bonus points). It’s not all about perfection; its the thought that counts and lasts.

Wrap Wisely

A lot of wrapping paper is more glitter than green. Opt for ecofriendly wrapping options to get create with newspaper, fabric or reusable boxes. It the outside that counts in this case.

Love Local Meal

Ditch the crowded restaurants this year and cook a thoughtful meal with locally sourced ingredients. It’s a win for your carbon footprint and a win for you pallet. Plus cooking together is the secret ingredient to a memorable evening. (Apart from the dishes after).

Valentine’s Day in the classroom is a big deal. But this year, lets teach our little guys about sustainable giving. DIY cards or ecofriendly gifts like seed packets are not just fun, they also teach our mini mees all about green value.

Volunteer as a Love Language

Why not propose a different type of commitment this year? Pledge to volunteer together. It’s a unique way to bond, give back to the community and support a cause close to your hearts. Plan an outdoor adventure that respects nature, like a hike in a national park, or water activity, or even a picnic at your favourite spot. I can see it now, a beautiful sunset talking about your future plans together. Cute. What a beautiful way to spend time together and show love for the planet.

Sustainable Movie Night.

Curate a list of documentaries or films with an environmental or sustainability theme. Enjoy a cozy movie night with organic popcorn and a glass of your favourite local organic wine. If you’re looking for a recommendation, irrespective of Valentine’s night, You Are What You Eat is a huge eye opener and has been hugely effective on so many people in our community.

Challenge each other to find the most eco-conscious gift, whether its a second hand book, up-cycled jewellery, or a donation to an environmentally charity in other’s name.

Whether you’re planning to dine out or cook at home, why not choose a plant based menu? It’s a healthier option and has a lower environmental footprint. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Ecofriendly Beauty Day

Perfect for a Galentines with your girls. But equally just as brilliant with your partner. Pamper each other with organic and cruelty-free spa products at home. Look for DIY recipes for face masks or bath bombs using natural ingredients.

Bike Ride to Somewhere New

Don’t forget your helmets guys. Instead of driving, plan a bike ride to explore a new area. It’s a fun, active and ecofriendly way to spend the day together. We’re not short on electric bikes in our city, lets face it.

Craft Night with Recycled Materials

Get creative and have a craft night using recycled materials. You could make scrapbooks, home decor or even some simple jewellery. If you look closely, you may see what you think is rubbish when in fact can be transformed into something really cool. I know when I was a little girl, I would obsess over making ‘things’. One of my favourites - making pen pots out of toilet roll tubes.
